Great stuff. Thank you! I was blown away by Hammond's steel guitar when i saw him in a Seattle festival in late '90s. Been a fan since. I've thought about the race thing. The shoe doesn't fit with Hammond like it does, say, with Zeppelin. He's the real deal. He absorbed his upbringing and influences and plays with authenticity that few others can match. The man is the blues, straight up.
Thanks for this, Tyler! Hammond is one of those guys who I keep forgetting about. I mean, I love hearing him play, but I always pick something else to listen to until the next time and then I say “why don’t I listen to more John Hammond?”
So thanks for bringing me to another John Hammond period.
Nice one, Mr. King. Not the first time I heard the Blues, but your reference to Mayall’s “Turning Point” made me realize that you turning me on to that album in ‘85 when we were in Monterey was the *first time* I really LISTENED to the blues. You got me thinking too about KAZU and I stumbled on to this article (https://www.kazu.org/2013-09-06/the-dawn-of-sun-records-15-hours-of-blues) that they did back in 2003 in Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records. I love the reference to James Cotton, another decent harp player. Thank you for continuing to share your musical journey! ✌🏼 Shaun
Thanks, Brother. Nice KAZU reference! I had not seen that. And a special thanks for the package that covertly arrived yesterday! See you a little further down the line...

Good to hear from you C.L. I thought about you while writing this one. I knew you'd be a John Hammond fan. Thanks for walking with us...
