Excellent piece; I believe the first show of Brötzmann's visual art in Chicago was in spring 2003 at 1926 Gallery, called The Inexplicable Flyswatter (I attended & have the catalog). Corbett curated it of course. Saw PB many times in Chicago in the early 2000s, although only with small groups, duos, and performing solo, not the Tentet.

Thank you for the historical correction, Clifford. I appreciate that. I'm glad I have that on the record now.

Being a student at SAIC then, I was entrusted with taking Brötzmann's horn to and from a repair shop before the opening, so it was hard to forget!

That's a great school, Clifford. I had a few friends who went there while I was in Chicago.

Now you are really rubbing it in. I guess that is what I get for living in Oklahoma.

I'm from Kansas so I understand!

thank you Tyler, this is so well written and documented. As a person who arrived in Chicago in 2004 and left in 2013, I never got to hear him in that town. I did get to see him in 2019 at Vision Fest here in NY which was incredible. I was in Wuppertal with Tomeka in October of 2022, he already wasn't feeling well and couldn't meet with us, his response was very kind. Thank you again for these beautiful memories

Thank you, well reasoned piece. I've heard a number of Brötzmann's recordings, but not I think any of the Tentet recordings. I saw Brötzmann only once, in 2015, with Hamid Drake and William Parker. Wonderful gig, the highlight of which was when he switched to tarogato, Parker pulled out a sintir and Drake came out front with a frame drum.

I have all of Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet music. I don't have all of Ken's music, but I'm getting there. My stepsons joke that I'm a music completist that is certainly on some spectrum. When you absolutely love the music of Brötzmann, Vandermark, Sun Ra, Braxton, Zappa (I'll stop here 😃), it can be expensive. However, it's the most fun I've ever had spending money. Needless to say, I sure wish I could have heard the Chicago improvised scene live. As Frank Zappa said, "Music is the best." 🤘😎🤘
