McLuhan, among his many and complex intellectual skills, was a James Joyce scholar, and this famous quote from “Finnegan’s Wake”appeared in “The Medium is the Massage”:

“The West shall shake the East awake, while ye have the night for morn.”

When I was at UCLA, I took a Duke Ellington class taught by Kenny Burrell. I remember this album!. Vive la Ellington!

I confess I’ve never heard this album. I always liked the cover art, but passed it over when flipping through the racks. Thanks for bringing this in; I’ll listen to it soon.

For most of my life, I’ve thought of the Duke in terms of his influence - on Monk, on Mingus, on Sun Ra; on American music in general. It’s always good to listen to some straight up Ellington!

Like so many on the Big River called Jazz, I learned them backward. I heard most of Ellington's later music before I ever heard the early music you mention which influenced Monk, Mingus, and Sun Ra...and Burrell.
